Halfway through the month and I definitely have accomplished some things I set out to do. I hope you have too!
visual philes.
This week I finally watched a movie I’ve been trying to get around to for awhile: Spiral. I don’t think I was writing these newsletters when it first released. But, if I was, then I apologize for sharing this information twice lol. Leading up to when it was first released, I watched all the other Saw movies (except Jigsaw) so I would have full context. I understood it was not a direct continuation of the story in those movies but I still wanted to see them. After watching, I realized there was a lot more going on than just the traps. In fact, the people setting up the traps and the people in them and their connections are where the true complex story is.
Anyway, Spiral may not have been “complex” but there were certainly connections among the characters involved. I appreciated how this movie mirrored signature aspects of the original movies (quick cuts, big reveal at the end, flashbacks) and did something somewhat new at the same time.

The new KAYTRANADA x Amine song has been on repeat for me. They are releasing a collab project under the name “KaytrAmine” and I think this name is excellent. Their first single “4Eva” features Pharrell and a creative and fun music video. The song itself has that signature KAYTRANADA bounce and Amine floats all over it with his rapped verses.
The new Temples album Exotico dropped and I had to wait until I could sit in the sun to hear it. Based on the cover, the singles and the promo material, this was the best way to experience it. After listening to it in the park, I can confirm this was a wise choice. The best way to describe the album is “sunny” due to the melodies and overall atmosphere of the songs. The psychedelic feeling is still there but there are more elements added to it that make each song stand out.

Since almost the beginning of this month, I’ve been going to a park in my neighborhood every day to read. Previously, I would sit on my patio or front porch. With it being even warmer and the sun being up longer, I figured the walk to and from a different destination would be nice too. There’s nice lake right beside where I read which is great visually and helps the temperature not get too hot. I usually read while listening to music but when I take my headphones out, I can hear the birds and other sounds of nature which are very peaceful.
I also made chicken sandwiches this week (with a few nuggets too!) for the first time. My plan was not to “copy” Chick-Fil-A exactly but they were an inspiration. While the outer coating was not perfect, I learned from my mistake and they still tasted great! And yes, those are brioche buns. Also, yes, I made homemade Chick-Fil-A sauce!
closing philes.
Be sure to spend some time outside if you haven’t yet. Enjoy the long spring days in whatever way you want!
