A new month is the best time to start something new and set a new goal - or three.
visual philes.
Most recently, I started season three of The Mandalorian. I like how (at least so far) this season is about Mando redeeming himself. Without spoiling too much, I’ll say I like how season one was us learning who he is and this season he has to reestablish that identity for himself and others. I’ve also been watching Physical:100 on Netflix which is a Korean athletic competition show. Even though it is a competition, the contestants are always rooting for one another. This happens in team and individual situations. Everyone wants their strengths tested equally.
The last movie I watched was Fantastic Mr. Fox and I’m mad it took me so long to see it. Wes Anderson proved his colorful and symmetrical aesthetics could work for stop motion too. As usual with him, there were unique jokes - and running jokes - that fit well in the film. The story was unique and creative and while I have not read the Roald Dahl book it was adapted from, it did make me want to.

Since it’s been a few weeks, there are several music projects I wanted to speak on.
Logic’s album, College Park is a concept album. It follows him and his fellow Maryland crew/rappers on a car ride to his first live performance. Several of the songs have skits at the end that move the story forward. Naturally, the songs connect to them as well. As a longtime Logic fan, I am well aware he can be hit and miss with his music. However, like his album before this one, College Park is a hit. It takes the production he’s been favoring lately to an even higher level. His songwriting is a good reflection of where he has been and where he is now.
Kali Uchis’ album Red Moon in Venus is BEAUTIFUL. You’ll have to go here to see my detailed thoughts on it!
I would say I am a fan of Don Toliver. However, his new album Love Sick is not exactly my favorite project from him. I understand why he wanted to change things up a little but for me they didn’t always work. The songs he put on the deluxe edition - that dropped less than a week after the original - were much more in line with what I like to hear from him.
read philes.
Recently I finished part 1 of Afro Samurai. I remember seeing posters and things for the movie back when it came out but never saw it. Now that I’ve read part 1 of the graphic novel I have to get part 2 - then I’ll watch the movie.
I recently started reading a book titled This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession by Daniel J. Levitin. The book talks about the brain’s connections to music and it has been truly fascinating so far. I’ve read about the topic in another book but this book looks at it in a little bit more of a casual way.
experience philes.
I have news to share: I GOT A NEW JOB! I’m now a writer at a site called HotNewHipHop. I’m really excited about the position and am looking forward to where it takes me. I’m pretty used to my new schedule with it already since I’ve always been good with time management.
As you know, I’ve given myself a challenge to listen to 100 albums this year. Last week my focus is black artists and you can read that entry here. Since March is National Women’s History month, I’ll only be picking artists that are women this month!
